The Golden Gate Bridge has 6 lanes road. It is located in the western United States in California and was inaugurated on May 27, 1937. On the first day of operation, was open only to pedestrian bridge, that day (called the Pedestrian Day) the bridge has been crossed by 200,000 people. With an opening of 1.280 meters, the Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco to Sausalito, located at north of the Golden Gate Strait that connects San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean.
The bridge, which has a total length of 2737 meters, has become famous in that huge first building that was suspended at 150 meters above the sea level, while being a shining example of the late Art Deco architectural style of United States. It is a symbol of San Francisco, often identified with the liberal spirit of this influential Californian city.

Bridge Construction
The first plans to link by a bridge the two sides of the Golden Gate strait are dating from 1871, many experts having doubts about the possibility of financing this project. In 1920 there were renewed preparations for the project, with all objections and actions to boycott the ship owners, whose vessels were crossing the strait. Bridge construction period lasted from January 5 1933 until May 27, 1937 under the leadership of chief engineer Joseph B. Strauss, having as assistants Charles Ellis and Leon Moiseff. It is interesting that this controversial bridge required: “200 million words to convince people of its existence need and only four years and 35,000 dollars for its construction. ”
During the bridge construction there were 14 fatalities. Making the bridge construction required great technical achievement, being for a good period of time the longest suspensioned bridge (2332 m) in the world. The supporting pillar is 227 m high and 92 cm thick tow. The bridge weighs 887,000 tons, which were used to build 600,000 rivets. It was built entirely from donations over a period of time when the United States was found itself after the Great Economic Depression, and when the U.S. economy faced a high unemployment.
Traffic
Golden Gate Bridge serves as a vital transport link to Highway 101, which connects the city of San Francisco and Marin County. The bridge has a system in real-time traffic monitoring, which allows reconfiguration of traffic lanes on the number and direction of the car. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic is permitted only on sidewalks and only during the day. Access of dogs are allowed if they are accompanied by their owners and are on a leash.
