Currently there are about 40 floating villages found on the lake in the world’s highest altitude (3800 meters above sea level), which housed several hundred people, mostly descendants of the Uro people. Absolutely everything is made of reeds and roots tortora, a local plant that grows on the edge of Lake Titicaca.
The biggest from the artificial islands, it houses 10 families in huts made of plants as well, while in the lowest (approximately 30 meters in diameter) there don’t live more than two families.
Locals have survived the passage of time, based mainly on fishing, hunting of bird and trade with the Aymara population. Currently, the bulk of revenues come from tourists who come in large numbers to admire what they call a true wonder of the world.
The islands are anchored with underwater pillars rope and they can move depending on those who want to live on them.
Here there is no electricity, the drinking water is that of the lake’s one, and people are cooking at the fire they burn over some piles of stones, so that they will not ignite the whole island. In fact there are no doctors, and men are the ones who help their wives give birth.
Float on the Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and visit the unique islands. With an area of about 8.400 square meters, the lake is surrounded by ancient ruins and houses the steam ship of the nineteenth century, Yavari.
